Things to Consider for keeping Chickens in your Melbourne backyard.
What size is your Yard?
If you live close to the city, you may have a smaller yard. You can still keep chooks in a smaller yard, you just need to work out how much space you have as it’s important to make sure that the size of your yard is big enough to accommodate the chicken coop whilst leaving enough room to let them reign freely.
Chickens shouldn’t be kept in their coops all day, they need to be let out on a regular basis, so don’t forget to take this into consideration when planning out your yard and where to put your chook house.
You’ll find all the details for the dimensions of all our coops clearly listed in the product description, simply add approximately 2 – 3 sq metres per chook and that will tell you how much room you will need in your yard.
Try not to skimp on space, chickens need to have the room to run around freely. If there’s not enough room it could cause your chooks to stress as they don’t like being on top of each other, this can lead to some nasty behaviour like pecking each other, cannibalism or even death.
Check Your Local Councils
All states and territories have different council regulation, so don’t forget to check with your local council to see if there are any restrictions pertaining to the keeping of chooks.
It’s not unusual for some of the Melbourne City Council to stipulate how many chooks you are allowed to keep. Some councils will also state the type of chickens you can, as well as the number of chooks. It’s not uncommon for councils to stipulate that roosters are not allowed.
Check your local council website to see if they have this information available online or simply give them a call.
Melbourne Weather Conditions
The weather in Melbourne can be quite unpredictable at times, and it’s not uncommon for the temperatures to change quite quickly throughout the day, cool in the morning, hot around midday then very cold at night.
