Discover Somerzby’s Range of Durable Chicken Runs & Extensions

A chicken run provides a safe outdoor space where backyard chickens can roam, forage and exercise during the day while staying securely enclosed.

At Somerzby, our runs are versatile—they can be used as standalone enclosures or attached to a chicken coop as an extension for extra space. Designed with durability and security in mind, they help safeguard your flock from predators while standing up to Australia’s harsh conditions.

Explore Our Range of Chicken Runs

Mansion Run

The Mansion Run is our smallest chicken run, ideal for families with small backyards in suburbia who own 2 or 3 chooks. It is fully enclosed so it can be used as a standalone run in a small backyard or can be attached to our Mansion Coop as an extension.

Like all Somerzby chicken runs, it is made from rot-resistant timber and has strong galvanised wire mesh on the sides and top. It is coated in a white water-based stain to give it a modern appearance.

Cabana Run

The Cabana Run is a medium-sized chicken run in a natural timber colour. Its narrow shape makes it perfect for people in urban areas with limited space as it can fit down the side of your house. We recommend it for 3 or 4 hens to roam in.

It is designed to attach to the Cabana Coop as an extension, so it comes open at one end and is not fully enclosed.

Large Run

At 3 metres long, the Large Run is our biggest chicken run. Suitable for those with big backyards or in rural areas, the Large Run has enough room for 6 chickens to roam freely all day enjoying the fresh air.  It is a natural timber colour, helping it blend seamlessly into your backyard.

It is fully enclosed and can be used as a standalone run or attached as an extension onto the Somerzby Homestead and Estate coops.

Castle Run

The Castle Run offers the same spacious area as our Large Run, providing room for up to 6 hens to roam comfortably throughout the day. However, what sets it apart is its stylish design. With a pitched roof and modern white stain, the Castle Run blends seamlessly into contemporary outdoor spaces, making it the perfect choice for those who want a chicken run that complements their home’s Hamptons-style aesthetic.

It is fully enclosed so can be used standalone or attached to the Castle chicken coop as an extension.

Why Choose Somerzby’s Chicken Runs

Long Lasting Timber

When buying a chicken run, it’s tempting to opt for cheaper models made from inferior materials like plywood. While these runs may seem like a bargain, they often won’t last long. Over time, poor-quality timber can warp or rot, especially when exposed to the elements. This leaves your chickens vulnerable and could end up costing you more in repairs or replacements down the line.

In contrast, all Somerzby chicken runs are crafted from fir timber, known for its natural rot resistance and durability in outdoor conditions. Fir doesn’t need chemical treatments, which could harm your flock, ensuring a safe environment for your chickens.

Additionally, our water-based, non-toxic stain adds an extra layer of protection while being safe for your pets to peck on.

Quality Wire Mesh

The sides and top of our chicken runs are made with galvanised wire mesh that won’t rust, ensuring long-lasting durability. Unlike lower-quality models, which can weaken over time as rust causes the wire to break, our sturdy mesh maintains its strength to keep your chickens safe and secure for years to come.

The holes in the mesh for our chicken runs are 11mm x 11mm, ensuring it keeps out all unwanted predators including snakes, mice and rats. The wire is 0.9mm thick which means foxes and cats can’t chew through it, safeguarding your flock from harm.

Easy to Assemble & Disassemble

Our chicken runs are a breeze to assemble yourself at home. No need to hire an expensive handyman!

Our flatpacks come in panels with the wire mesh already attached to the frames and the timber already stained. You just need to line the panels up and screw them together.

We provide screws and easy-to-follow instructions. You only need a battery-powered screwdriver and a couple of hours of free time.

Why Your Chickens Need a Quality Chicken Run

A quality chicken run benefits your flock by allowing them the freedom to roam outdoors while keeping them safe, giving you peace of mind.

Chicken Runs Protect Your Flock from Predators

Predators are a constant threat to pet chickens, including foxes, snakes, birds of prey and more. Somerzby’s chicken runs act as a reliable barrier, keeping your chickens safe from such threats.

The galvanised wire mesh is thick enough to prevent predators from breaking in, giving you peace of mind that your flock is well-protected while they roam outdoors in your backyard.

Chicken Runs Encourage Natural Behaviours

Adding a run as an extension onto your chicken’s coop allows chickens more space to engage in natural behaviours, enhancing their physical activity and overall well-being.

A run provides chickens the opportunity to stretch, forage for food and take dust baths, all of which are crucial for their feather maintenance and mite prevention. By mimicking their natural environment, chicken runs help reduce stress and encourage behaviours that lead to healthier and happier chickens. This setup not only improves their quality of life but also supports their instinctual needs.

Chicken Runs Reduce the Risk of Common Diseases Found in Chickens

When chickens are kept in a confined or overcrowded coop, waste buildup and poor ventilation can lead to harmful bacteria and parasites spreading quickly. Coccidiosis, Marek’s disease and respiratory issues such as infectious bronchitis all thrive in enclosures that are overcrowded, poorly ventilated and dirty.

Meanwhile, a well-maintained, clean outdoor run with plenty of space allows for better hygiene, airflow and easier cleaning, reducing the risk of infectious diseases.

How to Choose the Right Chicken Run for Your Flock

Choosing the right chicken run for your flock requires careful consideration to ensure it meets their needs and keeps them safe.

Consider Your Flock Size and Space Requirements

When choosing a chicken run, it’s important to consider the number of chickens you have and how much space each one needs to stay happy and healthy. Chickens should have at least one square metre of outdoor run space per bird, but we recommend going bigger if possible.

Providing more space allows for better movement, reduced stress and natural foraging.

Features to Look For in a Quality Chicken Run

Before buying a chicken run, especially online, it’s important to carefully check its features to ensure it’s well-made and safe for your flock.

Look for a run with a secure door, strong latches and easy access points for cleaning. Also, make sure the materials used are weather-resistant and durable, to ensure the longevity of your product.

Material Matters – Wood, Metal, or Mesh?

Before buying a chicken run, check what it is made from.

We recommend timber runs with wire mesh on the top and sides that is thick enough to be chew-proof and protect your chooks from predators. Choose a timber that is naturally rot-resistant and long-lasting (like fir) and ensure it is coated in non-toxic water-based stain (in case your girls peck at the wood).

Avoid metal enclosures as they can cause your chickens to overheat in summer.
